About Our School
Glenwood High School serves grades 9-12. By the time students reach GHS, their experiences and accumulated knowledge enable them to confidently make choices about their subject discipline and, ultimately, choices about their futures.
Many students at Glenwood High School enjoy flexible and broad-based college preparatory classes, as well as general education classes. Many others benefit from the school’s affiliation with the Capital Area Career Center and thus choose from a wide variety of vocational education classes. Glenwood High School also has in place an independent study program in which students, with the appropriate approvals, may explore curricula not included in the regular offerings.
A sampling of Glenwood’s interesting and innovative course offerings includes: Project Lead the Way; LLCC's First Semester program, Sangamon CEO, theatre arts, sculpture, studio art, economics, environmental biochemistry, astronomy, human anatomy and physiology, personal finance, and investments, business law, internet/web page design, desktop publishing, broadcasting, photography, show choir, A+ Computer Tech, world and British literature, peer helpers and facilitators, and strength and conditioning (physical education). Advanced Placement (AP) classes offered are: Music Theory, United States History, European History, English Language & Composition, English Literature & Composition, Micro and Macro Economics, Calculus AB, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, Studio Art 2D Design, Spanish, and German.
In addition to the college preparatory and general education classes, students have an array of extra-curricular activities in which to participate: 23 varsity sports, along with cheerleading, and dance; Key Club; Science Club; publications; Cross Cultures Club; Scholastic Bowl; Technology Student Association; speech; jazz band; color guard, Art Club; FCA; Good Times Unlimited; Student Council; Yearbook; National Honor Society; and musical/theatrical performances.
The 2020-21 Glenwood Athletics Department consisted of 122 coaching positions (56 paid and 26 volunteer high school and 31 paid and 9 volunteer middle school coaching positions), one athletic trainer provided through Springfield Clinic Sports Medicine, one athletic administrative assistant, one assistant principal with GMS athletic duties, and one director of athletics.

Glenwood High School’s music programs have long been a source of pride for our school and community as well. In 2021-22, several GHS students were selected by strenuous audition for the Illinois All-State Music Festival in Peoria, earning positions in the All-State Band, Honors Band, and All-State Chorus.
In 2021-22, Glenwood High School boasted 48 National Honor Society members; 36 Glenwood Scholars; 48 Illinois State Scholars; and one National Merit Semi-finalist.
Glenwood graduates have a tradition of entering many fine colleges and universities including the following: Augustana, Beloit, Brigham Young University-Idaho, Duke, Eastern Illinois University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Gustavus Adolphus, Harvard University, Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan, Johns Hopkins, Lincoln Land Community College, MIT, Michigan Tech, North Central, Northern Illinois University, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Springfield, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Valparaiso, Vanderbilt, Washington University in St. Louis, Western Illinois University, Wheaton College, and Yale.
