Office of the Superintendent

Dear Titan Families,

Here we are.  It is nearly the beginning of November, and we have sustained our PreK-8th grade Blended/Virtual model. Our high school students will begin their Blended/Virtual model on Monday, Nov. 16.  I, along with our teachers, administration, and Board of Education, appreciate your patience, support, and understanding.  While we have experienced a great deal of success, we have also encountered some challenges.  We will continue to evaluate our programs and delivery models so that we can provide the best experiences given our circumstances. You, as parents, have sacrificed a great deal and we understand this.  Many parents have reached out and received additional resources and support as is needed.  It can vary from student to student and family to family.  We will be there for you.  Please be sure to contact your child's school if there are other supports that we may be able to assist you with during this challenging time.

Here’s some great news! We have received our raw data for the MAP testing this past Fall.  When comparing individual and cohort data from the Fall of 2019 to the Fall of 2020, we are seeing academic improvement in 70-75% of the benchmark areas. Although we have faced many challenges, this does demonstrate the commitment of our teachers to excellence in their craft, and caring for their students. We will analyze the data further and will have a full report of academic progress this winter.

Thank you to everyone that participated in Parent/Teacher Conferences this past week.  The feedback we have received has been very positive.  The virtual format this year allowed for more flexibility for parents to participate.  For the most part, parents did not have to take time from work, arrange for child care, or drive to an appointment.  Having checked with our teachers, we received comments such as, " More families are attending my parent-teacher conferences because it's easier for them to join. Rather than having to take off work and drive to GMS, they can log on and discuss their child's progress via Google. I have the highest engagement ever this year!"  As with everything that is new this year, we will gather data, evaluate the effectiveness, and adjust as necessary for the future.  Once again, thank you for your participation.

I will close with this: Although we are working through a great deal this year, we continue to face challenges and rise above as we always have.  Our school district is truly fortunate to have a community that is so supportive.  Thank you for your contributions to make BCSD #5 the best it can be for all of our students.

With Titan Pride,
