Ethan Whelpley Among 10 Winners of “This I Believe” Essay Contest
Congratulations to Ethan Whelpley, senior at Glenwood High School, for being one of 10 area students whose essays best represent the spirit of the annual NPR Illinois “This I Believe” contest! The students will be honored on March 4 during a ceremony at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The winners will get to read their essays in the museum’s Union Theater, and also receive a $500 stipend.
The essay contest is based on the 1951 radio program hosted by Edward R. Murrow that gave contributors the chance to write a short essay conveying what they believe. NPR Illinois adopted this idea to ask central Illinois high school seniors to write about their beliefs as they prepare to enter adulthood.
Ethan’s essay was titled, “Chemistry Lessons.” His, and the other winners’ essays, will air on NPR Illinois and in the State Journal-Register. The project is supported by the Rotary Club of Springfield Sunrise; Kerber, Eck & Braeckel LLP; Marine Bank; BLH Computers; Brian Barstead; the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Foundation, and Rotary District 6460.
