Return to Learn - Update - August 19, 2020
Dear Titan Families,
A new school year is upon us. COVID is going to make this year totally different from anything we’ve experienced, but we’re still dedicated to providing the best learning opportunities possible despite all the challenges we’re facing. I know that everyone is excited to get started this school year. We appreciate the efforts of our staff to adjust to alternative teaching methods, and we appreciate your efforts to adjust as well. I’d like to inform you of a few important updates:
First, and as you have likely heard, the Board of Education voted Monday evening to continue with our current Return to Learn plan in which we have offered two learning models/options: Blended learning with in-person and remote instruction, and all virtual learning.
Next are details you need to know moving forward.
To give our staff time for additional training and to offer transition days/times for our families next week, the District is pushing back the start of school to Friday, August 28 for all students to begin their Friday remote and/or virtual studies and activities. Our in-person learners will attend school beginning August 31. For further clarity, see the schedule below:
Monday, August 24th - Teachers remote/virtual learning planning day
Tuesday, August 25th - Teachers remote/virtual learning planning day
Wednesday, August 26th - Orientation and tech training for students - principals to send schedules and details
Thursday, August 27th - Orientation and tech training for students - principals to send schedules and details
Friday, August 28th - First day of remote/virtual learning for all students
Monday, August 31st - First day for in-person learners to attend in their schools
Schedules and assignments
Schedules and teacher assignments will be available through Skyward Family Access according to this schedule:
BES/CES/GES/GIS: Friday, August 21, after 4 p.m.
GMS/GHS: Monday, August 24, after 4 p.m.
Please note: Change requests from the Blended Instruction Learning model will no longer be accepted after 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2020 so that we can finalize our class lists.
Virtual Learners Transition Times
Virtual learning students in grades K-12 and their parents will be contacted by their principal to schedule a time to visit campus next Wednesday, August 26, or Thursday, August 27 to come in and meet their teachers, collect books and materials, and learn how to log into and navigate our online learning platforms. They will also discuss class/learning expectations so that they will be successful in their learning. All students and parents are required to wear masks or cloth face coverings while in the building during their scheduled times. Please arrive and leave the building at the designated times so as not to violate the 50 in-person limit as set by ISBE and IDPH.
In-Person Learners Transition Times
In-person learning students in grades K-12 and their parents will be contacted by their principal to set up times next Wednesday, August 26 or Thursday, August 27, to come into their school to walk their schedules and learn where their classrooms are. All students and parents are required to wear masks or cloth face coverings while in the building during their scheduled times. Please arrive and leave the building at the designated times so as not to violate the 50 in-person limit as set by ISBE and IDPH.
On Monday, August 31, all in-person learners will be greeted at their schools by staff who will escort them to their new classrooms. They will then meet their teachers, receive books and materials, and learn how to log-in and navigate our online platforms. They will also discuss class/learning expectations so that they will be successful in their learning.
The first two weeks of meals are now posted on all our school websites, and can also be found here (https://www.chathamschools.org/menus-2). Parents of our virtual learners should email our Food Service Director, Chad Martel, at firstname.lastname@example.org to coordinate times and places to pick up meals for their students.
Bus/transportation schedules and pick-up/drop-off locations are now up on Skyward Family Access. Contact the Transportation Department at 483-6098, or email the Transportation Director, Jim Lovelace, (email@example.com) if you have any questions in regards to these details.
Health Self-Certification through Skyward
Parents of in-person learners must certify that their children are COVID-19 symptom-free each day before either boarding the bus, or arriving at our schools via their own transportation. This will be accomplished using the Skyward app.
The Skyward app is available in the Apple Store or Google Play. Please note that the Skyward app will not be open for use until after 4 p.m. on August 24. You may also self-certify your child through Skyward Family Access online at: https://skyward.iscorp.com/scripts/wsisa.dll/WService=wscomballchathamil/seplog01.w.
I appreciate your understanding as we continue to navigate this together. Our objective is to fully implement the Return to Learn Plan that was approved at the July Board meeting, while minimizing disruption for our families. Thank you once again for your patience and understanding.
