School Meals to be Offered at NO CHARGE to ALL Students Sept. 8 - Dec. 31!

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has implemented flexibilities related to School Nutrition Programs that will allow the Ball-Chatham School District to provide complete meals to all students at no charge. This flexibility is tentatively set to expire on December 31, 2020.

This applies to all students regardless of whether they opted for the virtual or blended learning options, AND regardless of whether they were approved for Free, Reduced-Price, or Paid meals.

The USDA's guidance officially became effective as of September 1, 2020. Any complete meals that were charged to students will be refunded or backed out of the system. The no-charge flexibility to all students does NOT apply to a la carte purchases so households are still responsible for any of those past or future purchases.

All schools in the district will be able to provide these meals. The plan is to include the high school in this process also, but we ask that you please allow us time to make the necessary adjustments at GHS and the other school sites.

Details regarding pickup processes for virtual students are being adjusted based on this new information. We hope to release updated information regarding virtual student meal pickup in time for next week's meals.

As a refresher, blended and virtual learning students at the K-8 schools currently have access to two meals per day that students are in attendance. The AM session students are allowed to select a breakfast meal for eating in the classroom, and they can select a sack lunch to take home at dismissal. The PM students are allowed to select a lunch meal for eating in the classroom, and they can select a sack breakfast to take home at dismissal. Families in the virtual learning option will be able to pick up at their school, curbside. Multiple distribution points are set up near all main entry points of the schools to allow for quick grab and go access for the students.

Your participation in any meal program remains completely optional.

Since this flexibility is not confirmed to last the entire school year, households are still encouraged to apply for Free or Reduced-Price meals. That will allow for a seamless transition when students return from winter break in January 2021.
