Transportation Message from Supt. Dr. Lamon

Dear Ball-Chatham families,

Transportation information is now available in Skyward Family Access. If your child will be riding a bus this year, please go online and check bus numbers, pick up and drop off locations, and times. If changes need to be made, please contact our Director of Transportation, Stanley Young at 217-483-6098 or email

As we are readying ourselves and our students for the 2022-23 school year, some of you may have questions about bus pick-up times in the morning.

First, Some Background

Over 2,700 BCSD students are transported each school day within a 100 square mile area that makes up our school district. Unfortunately, our boundaries are not a clean, geometric shape; rather, they meander far and wide and touch not only Chatham but also Springfield, Rochester, Pawnee, and Glenarm zip codes as well. This graphic will give you a general idea of the area of our district.

We endeavor to not have any child ride longer than one hour on any of our routes, even when picking up those who live on the periphery of our District. Accounting for the miles we must traverse is part of the formula for setting bus pick-up times.

Ensuring Students have the Opportunity to Eat Breakfast

Another consideration when setting bus pick-up times involves allowing time for our students to eat breakfast at school. Many of our students eat breakfast at home, but many others may not have that opportunity. Our goal is to deliver all students 15 minutes before the first bell rings to allow them that time to eat before class. Thus, the actual delivery to school is as follows:

  • BES/CES/GES - delivery to school at 7:15 a.m. with class starting at 7:30 a.m.

  • GIS - delivery to school between 7:05 and 7:10 a.m. with class starting at 7:30 a.m.

  • GMS/GHS - delivery to school between 7:50-8 a.m. with class starting at 8:15 a.m.

Parent/guardians should use the drop off time instead of the school start time if trying to determine ridership times.

And Lastly

During the first week of school, we ask for your patience as we continue to perfect routes and times. Routes are based on the students who ask for bussing but may not be present at stops. This will also cause some shifts in times. To ensure that your student does not miss the bus, please have students ready and at the stop 10 minutes prior to the expected time.

I hope this helps explain why the times are set as they are. Should you have any questions, please feel free to email me at
