  • School Board Meeting Recap 6/21/23

    The Ball-Chatham Board of Education met for its regularly scheduled meeting at the District Office in Chatham, IL on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. The following is a summation of the items discussed and those that were approved, as well as links to those items in the Board packet. Additionally, here is a link to Supt. COMMUNICATIONS Recognition of State Finalists in Track and Soccer Congratulations to the GMS and GHS students who qualified or placed at a state competition this spring. Recognition of CACC Second Semester Students of the Month Congratulations to the CACC Students of the Month from January through April. One Cent County Sales Tax Presentation Dr. Lamon provided an overview of the One Cent Country Sales tax. She shared the history of the tax and how the district has spent the funds for the past three years. In addition, she shared the proposed projects for FY24 (July 1, 2023- June 30, 2024) and FY 25 (July 1, 2024- June 30, 2025) A copy of the presentation is available from this link. BUDGET HEARING Budget Hearing for FY2022 Budget Amendments Charlotte Montgomery, BCSD Chief Business Officer, fielded one question about the amended budget and explained that the amendment is a process in which the district can make changes to the original budget that was approved in September 2022 to reflect how funds were spent. A budget is a proposal to spend funds and there are events and emergencies that shift how funds are spent. Approve FY2023 Amended Budget The amended budget was approved by a unanimous vote by Calderon, Murphy, Phipps, Rediger, Bryant and Saunders. CONSENT ITEMS The following items were approved by one consent vote: Minutes of Regular Board Meeting, May 31, 2023 Minutes of Facilities and Grounds Committee Meeting, June 7, 2023 Treasurer/Financial Report School District Accounts Payable School Activity Account Reports FOIA Requests Second Reading of PRESS Policies PERSONNEL CONSENT AGENDA ITEMS Starting this month, Board Docs has a new streamlined look. Categories have been established in the personnel consent area to make information more accessible. Click each link to see the items approved. Resignations New Hires Retirements - none Transfers Leaves of Absence - none Reclassifications Administrative Contracts 2023/24 A few administrative contracts had some errors that needed to be corrected from the May meeting.The corrections did not pertain to salary. The corrections were related to a change in language from TRS to IMFR and a correction in the number of sick days (Wheeler). NEW BUSINESS Paper Bid Results The paper bid was awarded to Contract Paper Group, inc. at $33.10 per case. New District Office Project Dr. Lamon gave a presentation on the benefits of renovating and moving to the new district office, formerly the WSEC PBS Station. The presentation can be obtained in this link. BCSD Fire and Burglar Alarm Systems Thompson Electronics was awarded the district's Fire and Burglar alarm contract. The contract is for three (3) years beginning July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2026, and includes all district facilities. The recommendation is based on the bid amount of $5,760 per year for monitoring and $6,510 per year for inspections and testing. The vendor has verified through the RFP process that they possess adequate staffing and equipment to professionally maintain the district's fire and security systems. Non-ESP Raises ESP staff members who are not members of the union were given a 4% raise. Raises for School Safety Officers The base salary of the SSO staff was adjusted to $25.00 per hour. Staff members already over the new base were given a 4% raise.     The Ball-Chatham Board of Education will hold a regular meeting* at 6:30 p.m. on June 21 at the Ball-Chatham District Office - 201 W. Mulberry in Chatham. *Please note, this meeting was originally set for June 28 but has now been rescheduled. Those who wish to address the Board must do so in person, from the podium. They must also state their names in order to be recorded in the meeting minutes. Those who are unable to attend but who wish to communicate directly with our board members may email them at BCSDBoardofEducation@bcsd5.org. Please note, however, that email communications will not be read aloud. Though the meetings are no longer live-streamed, a video summation of the items discussed and those that were approved will be available the on the District's YouTube channel within 24 hours of the meeting. The full video of the meeting will also be available for viewing on the District's YouTube channel at that time. Finally, a written summation of the meeting will be available on the District's website within 24 hours of the meeting. Dr. Lamon’s video recap of the meeting COMMUNICATIONS Information: GHS Strength and Fitness Presentation Caleb Cox, GHS Strength and Conditioning Coach, gave a presentation on the stats and student growth of those students who participated in the new Strength and Conditioning course at Glenwood HS during the 2022- 2023 school year. Strength and Conditioning Presentation Information: Citizens- Opportunity for Visitors to Address the School Board Concerning any Agenda Topic Scott Curtis shared his support for Kody Kirkpatrick, GHS Boys Basketball Coach. He spoke about a near accident on the way home from a game, the record of the team, different types of coaching, and the impact Coach Kirkpatrick had on his son. Ann Curtis Shared her support for Kody Kirkpatrick, GHS Boys Basketball Coach. She played a clip of her son's podcast interview, in which he praises Coach Kirkpatrick. CONSENT ITEMS Action: Adoption of Consent Agenda Items All members voted yes to adopt the consent agenda items, which can be found here. REORGANIZING THE BOARD Action: Oath of Office for Board Members Attorney Brandon Wright administered the Oath of Office to appointed board member Patrick Phipps. They then re-called the roll. NEW BUSINESS Information: Select Board Representatives for Board Committees Board President Saunders shared the appointment of the new Board Committee Members: CACC - Andrea Rediger Diversity/Equity/Inclusion - Andrea Rediger and Laura Calerdon Division Representative and IASB Delegate - Ann Strahle Finance - Ryan Murphy and Pat Phipps Facilities and Grounds - Steve Bryant and Pat Phipps Policy - Laura Calderon and Ann Strahle Action: Approval of Student Discipline Handbooks for 2023/24 School Year All board members voted "yes." Action: Renewal of GHS Boys Basketball Coach Board President Saunders called for a motion to approve the renewal of the GHS Boys' Basketball Coach, Kody Kirkpatrick. Phipps moved to approve the renewal. Upon said motion being seconded by Rediger, the Board President called for a vote. Phipps, Rediger, and Strahle voted "yes". Bryant, Calderon, Murphy and Saunders voted "no".     Congratulations to The following GHS students whose work has been selected for inclusion in the international literary journal Navigating the Maze. Olli Naskrent - "Bewildered Bug Reading a Newspaper" Piper Billingsley - “Initial Meeting,” “The Land After Ruin,” and “Become a Better Version of Yourself Today!” Emily Dulceak - "Submerged," "Fragile Feelings," and "Family Night" Nathan Gibson - “Frantic Flight," and "City Upon Ice"--COVER art!!!!! Reagan Gerton - "Circle of Friends," "McDonald's Eaglet," and "Audrey Hepburn" Kaelyn Hall - "Woodland Faerie Cottage," "Mushroom Faerie Village," "Pumpkin Faerie Patch" Claire Walker - "New beginnings" GHS also had two winners at the recent Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair. Samantha Adams and Claire Walker each received a $600 Senior Portfolio Award.

  • Final Exam Schedule

    Final exams are MANDATED for all students. MAKE UP EXAMS may be scheduled during study halls or on the afternoon of May 25 after being pre-arranged with the student’s teachers. Any Alternate Date For Exams must be approved by the teacher first - Forms for these exam changes can be found in the Office 1 & Counseling . Forms must be taken to be signed by the teacher and parent/guardian. The signed form must be returned to the principal's office by the end of the school day on May 19 for approval. Forms will not be accepted for consideration if turned in after the May 19th deadline. OPEN CAMPUS - During final exams, GHS permits an open campus. Students are free to leave the campus during times they do not have a scheduled exam, such as study halls and lunch. Students must leave campus promptly and parents must be aware. STUDY HALL (PREARRANGED MAKE-UP EXAM PERIODS) Students who remain on campus and are not taking an exam during an exam period will be appointed to a study hall in room 231. Students who do not wish to attend a study hall must plan for alternate transportation before the final exam days begin. Buses run on their regular daily schedule.

    The Ball-Chatham Board of Education met for a special meeting at the District Office in Chatham, Il on Monday, May 15, 2023. The following is a summation of the items discussed and those that were approved, as well as links to those items in the Board packet. Additionally, here is a link to Supt. Dr. Lamon’s video recap of the meeting. COMMUNICATIONS Recognition: Chatham Chargers Ms. Diane VanderKooy shared with the board the accomplishments of the Chatham Chargers and Skills Teams. The Chatham Chargers High School team won gold medals in the Illinois Special Olympics State High School Division while the Red Team won silver and the White team won gold in their categories. FINANCE Tentative FY23 Amended Budget Ms. Charlotte Montgomery presented the FY23 Tentative Amended Budget. You can access it online here.
