For nearly two centuries, students have been educated within the boundaries of the Ball-Chatham School District, first in one-room schoolhouses, to now over 963,000 square feet that comprise our six schools. We are one of the largest employers in Sangamon County, as well. We provide public education to 4,850 students, with more than 600 teachers and staff at work in our schools.

Substitute teachers - ROE Requirements

To be eligible to be a substitute teacher in Sangamon and Menard Counties, a person must have a Bachelor’s Degree and be issued a Substitute Authorization from ROE #51. Below are the different licenses you may hold to be a substitute teacher:

  • PEL (Professional Educator’s License)** OR

  • Substitute License (SUB)  AND

  • Substitute Authorization from Sangamon County ROE #51


**If you hold a PEL, you do NOT need a substitute license but you do need to complete the steps to receive a Substitute Authorization from Sangamon County ROE #51, 2201 S. Dirksen Parkway, Spfld, 62703.


Those interested must complete an application online (http://www.applitrack.com/BCSD/onlineapp/jobpostings/view.asp?internaltransferform.Url=) and retain a Substitute Authorization Form.  A criminal background check is part of the ROE process. The substitute teacher pay is $95 per day.


Substitute Paraprofessional - ROE Requirements

Paraprofessionals are personnel who assist in the instruction of pupils under the immediate supervision of a teacher who holds a valid license and is directly engaged in teaching subject matter or conducting activities.


You must be 19 years of age or older, ability to pass fingerprint criminal background check,  and hold one of the below to be a paraprofessional substitute:

  • Associate's Degree or higher, or

  • 60 semester hours of college coursework

Those interested must complete an application online at


Applicants need a paraprofessional license, must be at least 19 years of age and pass a criminal background check. The rate of pay is $12 per hour. 

School Bus Drivers 

Ball-Chatham offers bus drivers free training, retirement benefits, and additional earning opportunities by signing up for field trips or extracurricular event trips. Rate of pay is $18 per hour.
